Unleash the Beast, Kuro+ Turbocharger Upgrade Launches for the 2.0T Type R/Type S/AccordX
If you know anything about the Civic Type R, you know that it comes from a factory with a healthy 300+ HP. On paper that sounds great but get in the car and drive for any bit of time and you can tell Honda left a lot of potential on the table. A lot on the table for the aftermarket to come and swoop in to deliver a solution for more power.
We actually did just that when we developed our first Kuro drop in turbocharger for this platform about 2 years ago. After adding a host of common bolt-on mods like an intake, inlet pipe, downpipe, catback exhaust, and intercoolers the surefire way to break the 400WHP barrier is with a turbo upgrade. And that’s exactly where the original Kuro stepped up to deliver.
It did something different than the other aftermarket turbos that came before it. It sought to keep the responsiveness of the stock turbo that makes the car so fun to drive while adding some mid-range and top end power.
As soon as customers got this turbo installed, they fell in love with the OEM+ feel of it. It provides all the enjoyment that the stock FK8 and FL5 are known for but with a significant power bump.
And just check out a recent dyno graph below courtesy of our tuning partner IMWTUNED to see what Kuro can do with and without an upgraded fuel system.
Fast forward a bit and we couldn't help thinking some people might be willing to give up a bit more responsiveness for even more power?
Could we develop a turbo that was just as fun but had even more mid-range and top-end punch? Could we put together a package that didn’t lose that fun to drive factor like almost all the other bigger turbos out there did? We came up with the Kuro+.
As the name implies, “+” means more of the good stuff. We tweaked the compressor and turbine wheels to make them about 10% larger than Kuro. This enabled us to really max out the TD04 platform while keeping A/R stock to minimize turbo lag. Peep the dyno graph below to see exactly what we’re talking about.
Like anything else, there is a tradeoff in designing turbos. Go too big and you’ll have a lazy unresponsive turbo only good for top end performance. On the flip side, go too small and the power potential is limited.
We think we struck a perfect balance with the Kuro+ for those looking to crack the 500WHP mark with just a small sacrifice in spool compared to OEM and Kuro turbo.
And that brings us to a very important question; which Kuro you should go with since both Kuros have a place in our lineup?
Kuro: Shooting for 500WHP or less? Possibly sticking with the stock fuel system? Want a responsive turbo for more grunt and a healthy increase up top with almost no sacrifice to spool? Want to save some $$$? The OG Kuro is for you!
Kuro+: Want to eclipse 500WHP? Plan to upgrade your fuel system? Aiming for more mid-range and top end punch while maintaining good power down low? Kuro+ is the answer for you!
The best performance turbochargers for the FK8/FL5/DE5/CV2, Kuro and Kuro+, are available to purchase now!
