11th Generation Turbo Inlet Pipe, Design Pt. 3 (Sample Testing)

Welcome to part 3 of our design blog series for our upcoming Turbo Inlet Pipe for the L15CA found in the 2022+ Civic Si and 2023+ Acura Integra.

In our last blog we showed you some 3D models of what we were cooking up as we played around with just how large of an inlet pipe we could get under the hood. Since that blog, we have moved onto metal samples and want to show you what they look like on the car and what sort of data we are collecting to help dial in this huge upgrade for your ride.

First up let's take a look at just how BIG the 27WON TIP really is. We showed you in the last blog some models of the 27WON unit overlaid with the OEM unit so that you can visualize the difference in size. Now let's put some numbers to this. The stock turbo inlet pipe has an inlet diameter of 60.75mm ID and an outlet of 50.75mm ID.

The 27WON TIP will have an 80mm inlet ID and a 53.5mm outlet ID. That means this pipe is bigger end to end.

From where it gets air in to where it gets that air out and into the turbo, you’ll see a massive increase in size. This thing will move tons more air! These effects will be even more pronounced when the TIP is paired up with an aftermarket intake system.

Another great benefit of the large diameter inlet pipe is the effect it has on throttle response. That’s basically how quickly the engine and thus car responds to the input from your right foot. Our larger diameter than stock inlet pipe is like a big reservoir of air ready to feed the turbo. Rather than trying to scramble and suck air through the filter and intake when you press on the gas, the turbo will have a big resorvoir of air that it can pull from right away. This makes that initial tip-in on throttle faster and your turbo can spool up quicker. Just another little way the T.I.P. helps improve all around performance and driving.

Material was another big consideration for the construction of this inlet pipe. Our previous 10th generation T.I.P. was a one-piece cast aluminum pipe that has been very popular. It’s part that looks great, performs amazing, and holds up to the abuse of daily driving and racing all while being priced well. For the 11th gen we followed suit. We opted for A356 cast aluminum with T6 heat treatment. This material was chosen for several reasons. It has good fluidity, low tendency for thermal cracking and great corrosion resistance. All things we like in a part that will offer our standard lifetime warranty.

Another big consideration of our TIP design is style. Now, while performance is a big part of what we do, we also like to make parts that add flare to the car, like  our engine bay shrouds.

The OEM T.I.P. is straight up ugly. It’s a piece of plastic with divided lines on it and random stamps from the mold.

The 27WON pipe gets rid of all that and presents a large smooth surface on display. It’s so large, we added a relief for hood clearance and a debossed 27WON logo. Its larger than life surface area grabs your attention and it's the first thing you or anyone will notice when you pop open the hood.

One of my favorite things that we did was the relocate the EVAP purge nozzle. The stock one is right up front with the two rubber hoses going over the pipe. Get it out of front and center! We relocated the EVAP to the rear of the pipe so it is now hidden from plain sight. It’s still there and still functional, but you don’t have to look at it anymore.

The pipe on display is in our raw cast aluminum look. We will offer this T.I.P in our flat textured black color. We want to know what you think about the raw finish. Should we offer that too? Let us know in the comments below.

Next, we’ll continue to rack up the miles on the test units and dial in the performance via tuning optimizations. We’ll have these to market soon with more data for you guys.
